Engine room staff
They are rarely seen in the bowels of the Pourquoi Pas? , but the engine room staff obviously play a crucial role in the smooth running of the campaign.
The team consists of mechanics and electronics technicians. They are responsible for maintaining, monitoring and repairing the engine and propellant parts needed to move the vessel forward. They are also responsible for the circulation and recycling of water. From the PC Machine room, they can regulate and check all types of electrical problems on the ship. The composition of water and oil are checked daily.
They also repair any equipment on the bridge used during scientific operations (winch for the CTD or for dredges) and non-scientific equipment (air conditioning for example). The team works in "rounds" to check that the ship is functioning correctly and checks for any signs of ageing to anticipate work or replacement of parts or even improvements to equipment.
